A Night in Paradise

Wednesday, February 1, 2006

Map in hand & compass at the ready, Jane set out north, travelling across the harbour in search of her Wednesday night Songwriter’s Live gig.

Q: Our intrepid performers destination?

A: One of Northern Sydney’s rare Gems.

Jane ElizUnlike the numerous pokie palaces that dot the local landscape like the mould growing on my bathroom ceiling, the Old Manly Boatshed is a cosy venue with a proud history of providing live music. The boatie may not have the mind numbing hum of slot machines twinkling in the background, nor the mania of pensioners stampeding for the meat tray raffles, or even adequate air conditioning for a warm summer eve, but it had Jane Eliz onstage just before 9pm......Perfect.

Accompanying Jane with his silky guitar mojo was none other than Songwriters Live founder, Mr Keith Armitage. Founding Songwriters Live some five years ago to showcase leading & emerging local song writing talent, Keith is held in high regard by his musical peers, and is a man loved by fans of live original music for his promoting efforts......Legend.

After starting the set Jane was joined by Keith onstage and they fired up with “Misty Lines”. There is truly something magical about watching gifted musicians react to each other’s talent. “Misty Lines”, a hauntingly beautiful Jane Eliz song, held the large crowd captivated as Jane’s voice danced across the air towards our senses accompanied by rich guitar harmonies interspersed with soul grooving Armitage hammer-ons, bends, & pull-offs......Awesome.

A song with plenty of edge, & deep felt emotion followed, “Just a Name”. For those who have not heard the earthy, gritty, and passionate “Just a Name”, think Melissa Etheridge’s “Bring Me Some Water”. lookout, someone has given Jane grief & through her creative talent she has found an outlet to vent this particular personal demon. Captured & conveyed crisply, the songwriter’s message in a bottle resonates......Powerful.

Hopefully Jane will play more gigs across the harbour in the near future. Her northern fans sure to welcome her back for many more performances in paradise. I know they will leave the same way they did tonight.......Pleased.
